Competency Development

Stuart Wright designed a structured and guided Competency Development process with yearly assessment for our graduate engineers, as seen below. The Pyramid of Professional Development is spread over 5 years, which is a minimum desirable period to achieve “Professional Well Engineer” status. There are two intermediate levels on the way to professional status, namely ‘Foundation Level’ and ‘Applied Level’.

The ‘Foundation Level’ is designed to bring all graduates up to the same level of basic knowledge, which is expected to be achieved over a two year period. The ‘Applied Level’ is also a two year period when the engineers are expected  to be able to solve problems by applying the basic knowledge acquired at the Foundation Level.

Assessment of competency is through the completion of a “Competency Profile”. This profile contains a number of key skills and qualities required in a Professional Well Engineer. The methodology of completing the competencies is organised in a simple but precise way for our graduate engineers to tackle the relevant competencies at a given time in their first five years. Each competency is grouped under the Foundation, Applied, or Professional category.  Each accomplished competence has to be supported by written or verbal evidence, and is checked and signed by the local supervisor, such as a tool pusher offshore, and the assigned mentor onshore.

The Competency Profile is categorised into 4 main skill areas, each of which is crucial to achieving an “all round” set of abilities:

1.  Rig Based Practical Skills

2. Business Management Skills

3. Personal Development Skills

4. Technical Skills
